We started back to school last week. It wasn’t quite like I had it pictured in my mind, but that’s pretty typical. I created some first day of school signs and had the kids bunch together to get a picture. Here is my Facebook post.
We started our 2018 homeschool year today! Woohoo! You see Brantley’s foot there? That was just before she kicked Weston and just after she kicked Royce. And yes, it was on purpose. Weston was not happy that he had to take a picture my way. I barely got to get him to hold the sign. This is the best picture I had. But you know what? I don’t care. This is my life, this is me- messy, chaotic, imperfect.
Our First Day of School and Our Back to School Signs
This picture looks really cute and it looks like they’re all happy to start school. What you don’t see is that seconds before, Royce was riding an imaginary bareback horse until Brantley kicked him and then reached over and kicked Weston and made him cry.
That’s life around here. Crazy, chaotic, imperfect. This picture just goes to show that we may see someone who seems to have it all together, but underneath, their life may not be all it seems. Okay, okay, enough philosophy.
I thought that we would make our first week simple and fun. We started out just reading out of our morning book basket. I added books to it that corresponded to our history and science from My Father’s World- Rome to Reformation.

I had some art and poetry teatime planned throughout the week. Life got in the way and we weren’t able to add in any fun, artsy stuff or the poetry teatime.
The kids and I help my husband feed and work cattle most days. We have ranch hands to help with everything, but we started a trucking company and they decided to start trucking. That has nothing to do with first day of school printables does it?

Anyway, my youngest daughter is starting kindergarten this year. You want to know what her favorite part of her day is? It’s this little magnetic calender I bought from Amazon last year and never used. We’re using it now and she loves calender time. It’s magnetic so I hang it on my refrigerator. You could also hang it on your dishwasher or a steel door if your front door is steel.
So, we’re back to school this week working on Rome to the Reformation and so far we’re loving it. I didn’t expect anything else from My Father’s World though. This is the fun stuff that we should have done last week.
Over to you. How has your homeschooling been? Are you having as much fun as you expected?
