Who is excited for the holidays? “It’s the most wonderful time of the year!”

We often spend lots of time putting up decorations for visual beauty. We plan out and cook a wonderful feast for our taste buds to enjoy. We play Christmas music for our auditory pleasure.

But we don’t always give much attention to how the sense of smell can enhance the festivities for our homes and ourselves.

Diffusing holiday essential oils can enhance our senses and add to our holiday cheer. Some amazing scents to add are…

  • A Fresh Christmas Tree freshly cut and just brought in
  • The delightful smell of an early, magical Christmas Morning
  • Rudolph’s Delight to bring back your childhood memories of magical fantasies
  • Morning Joy to remind you of the beauty and joy of a crisp, winter morning
  • Give Thanks as a fall/Thanksgiving essential oil recipe

Essential oils have been used medicinally for centuries. Their healing properties allow us to sleep better, soothe pain, boost our energy, balance moods and hormones, relieve stress, and much more. My favorite way to use essential oils are in a diffuser.

Benefits of Diffusing Essential Oils

Before we get started let’s go over the benefits of diffusing essential oils. Diffusing oils is a method of dispersing aromatic molecules into the air and this in turn disperses the properties of the oils into the air you breathe. A few of the benefits of diffusing oils are…

  • Easiest and safest way to purify the air in your home
  • Boosts immunity
  • Safest way to get oils into your bloodstream
  • Cost effective if you use an ultrasonic diffuser
  • Add natural fragrance into a room

How to Diffuse Essential Oils

There are a variety of ways to diffuse essential oils and there isn’t one right or wrong way, but these are the easiest ways.

  • Ultrasonic Diffuser

This is by far the most popular way to diffuse essential oils. An ultrasonic diffuser produces a cool, fine mist that breaks the oils into tiny particles and distributes them into the air.

These diffusers use very little oil and therefore, are very cost effective and prolongs the use of your oils. This one is one of my favorites next to my Young Living diffuser.

  • Reed diffuser-

Reed diffusers work by placing a diffusing reed into a vase of oil. As the oil wicks up the reed it releases the fragrance and goodness into the room where it sits.

Think of a vase of flowers and the aroma they emit. They aren’t overpowering but you can definitely smell them as you walk by or sit by them. A reed diffuser’s smell is similar in that their smell is localized and doesn’t permeate the whole room.

  • Tea Light or Plug-in Diffusers

A diffuser with a low heat such as a scentsy candle warmer or a tea light candle warmer is a great way to diffuse the smell of essential oils. Add a little water and a few drops of oils and you’re good to go. This one is one of my favorites. I love the rustic wood grain look of it.

  • In the Palm of Hand

Add a couple of drops of oil in your hand, raise to your nose, and inhale. This is by far the easiest way to diffuse oils. However, it’s not the most cost effective. The drops that you put in your hand to last a few seconds can last 2 hours in an ultrasonic diffuser. But, it’s a great way to get your oils in in a pinch.

  • As a Room Spray

Fill a spray bottle with clean water and add essential oils. Spray on surfaces such as pillows, furniture, or into the air.

Caution: Use a glass bottle as some oils are acidic and can eat through a plastic bottle. And DO NOT use citrus oils on furniture.

  • On a Diffuser Bracelet or Neclace

Place a couple of drops on your bracelet or neclace and the scent stays with you for a while. The only downside to this is the benefits are the best right after you add the oil and diminish with time.

Make you own diffuser bracelet right here.

Essential Oils VS Room Air Fresheners

When I was a kid air fresheners were the thing. My mom went through the house periodically spraying it down with air freshener. I loved the Cinnamon fragrance.

My husband wants to keep a bottle of air freshener in the bathroom ( I’m changing his mind on that, though) because that’s just what you did when we were growing up.

But thanks to the popularity of essential oils I know better now. I’ve done my research and am more informed of the harmful chemicals in room air fresheners and the damage they can cause long term.

Some of the chemicals used in air fresheners are formaldehyde, petrochemicals, p-dichlorobenzene, phthalates, benzene, and VOC’s can cause asthma, allergies, and are even linked to cancer. (Source)

The warning labels are right there on the bottle, people, and we still choose to ignore them!

Essential oils have

  • Air purifying properties
  • No harsh chemicals
  • Medical benefits
  • Naturally freshen the air by locking in odors in the diffuser mist

I’ll stick with my all natural essential oils.

Besides smelling seasonal, these oils also have wonderful health benefits. So why not give them a try? Enjoy some of my favorite holiday essential oil diffuser recipes at the bottom of this post.

Peppermint – Candy cane anyone? Peppermint is also refreshing and energizing.

Cinnamon – A popular ingredient in winter cookies and baking. This is also great to strengthen immunity, which is so necessary in the winter!

Wintergreen – It has the word “winter” in it. Good enough for me! Plus when diffused, wintergreen is stimulating and uplifting.

Clove – Great in ginger snaps and ham. Your home smells like you made dinner even if you didn’t. And it’s warming and energizing.

Wild Orange – Who doesn’t love cranberry orange cookies, or a big orange in their stocking on Christmas morning? Plus Wild Orange essential oil has great immune boosting properties and helps to purify the air.

On Guard – On Guard is doTERRA’s proprietary blend. The primary two oils in this blend are clove and wild orange (see above). This is our family’s main immunity booster. Some people say this smells like “Christmas in a bottle.”

Douglas Fir – Oh, Christmas tree oh, Christmas tree! This promotes a positive mood and smells great when blended with citrus oils.

Frankincense – This is one of the things given to Jesus by the Wise Men. It is truly an essential oil fit for a king. Frankincense promotes feelings of peace, satisfaction, and overall wellness when diffused.

Myrrh – This is another fabulous gift given to Jesus. That’s Christmas-y, right? Myrrh promotes emotional balance and well being when diffused. Yes, please!

  1. Thanks for sharing these recipes. I’ve never tried this brand of e.o. though. It’s also genious of you to feature your daughter here. My 17 year-old daughter started my Pinterest page, writes and proofread for my blog now. Maybe I will give her credit this way too. Thanks again.
