As a stay at home mom living on one income, I’m always trying to think of a way to make a little extra money here and there. This spring I made almost $400 selling extra homeschool curriculum I had on a homeschool curriculum buy/sell group on Facebook. And some of it I had bought used and sold it for more than I paid for it. Score.
I’ve been a part of and participated in consignment events, Facebook buy/sell groups, Craigslist, and Ebay for a long time now and have used all of them to my advantage. I feel like I have a pretty good knowledge of what sells good on these and what’s a waste of time.
Making Extra Cash Fast
Today we’re going to take a look at some ideas to make money fast with all the things laying around our house that can be sold. Selling the stuff that we already have is a great way to get rid of extra clutter in our lives and make a little quick cash on the side.
If you’re asking yourself “what can I do to get extra cash” and you’re needing to make $50 or more quickly, you’ve come to the right place.
There has to be a balance when doing this though. It doesn’t pay off to sell something for $20 this week and need it next week and go buy it new for $50.
In my opinion the quickest way to get something sold quickly is Facebook. If you have something good it can sell the same day you posted it verses waiting a few weeks from an online consignment shop or Ebay.
17 Things to Sell to Make Extra Money Fast
Kitchen Gadgets
Do you have an extra coffee maker, espresso machine, or high end electric can opener you don’t use anymore? Maybe you have an all in one machine. Sell what you don’t use everyday. You won’t miss it. You’ll be glad to have the cash.
If they’re in working and good condition you can sell things such as coffee pots, electric can openers, keurig coffee makers, espresso machines, etc.
Espresso machines, blenders, kitchen stand mixers, keurigs, and the like can resell for a pretty good price.
Small Kitchen Appliances
Items such as toaster ovens, microwaves, and mini fridges sell great especially just before the beginning of school when students are going off to college. If it’s not something you need everyday or weekly you won’t regret parting from it. You probably won’t even notice it’s gone.
Kids Clothes
When selling kids clothes you have to use your better judgement. If you buy your kids clothes at Wal-Mart (like me) your not going to get much for what you have (if anything).
I used to buy clothes for my oldest daughter at a consignment event every season and the clothes that sell best are boutique clothing.
If you have nice, boutique style clothes or a good quality brand (ex. Underarmor) that can’t be found just anywhere, the best, quick way to sell them is on Facebook.
If your Facebook friends know how well your kids dress they more than likely will jump at the chance to buy your kids’ second hand clothes.
I have a few friends on Facebook that I wish their kids were older than mine so I could buy their kids’ clothes. Ha.
There are also Facebook kids clothing resell groups you can join and collect payment with Paypal. Be sure to charge for shipping or you won’t make much on your clothing.
A longer term online option is ThredUp.com or Swap.com. Of course, there is a consignment fee.
If you don’t have Facebook and don’t like to use the internet take your kids clothes to your local consignment shop or kids consignment event.
I’ve done both. Of course, by the time we’re done with them and they’ve been passed down a couple of times, I usually don’t have much to take. I did make enough one time to buy back all the clothing my daughter needed for the upcoming season.
Your Clothes
If you haven’t worn something in a year it’s time to get rid of it. Just like kids clothes, if your clothes are in good condition and high quality stuff you can resell them. Jeans are the easiest to sell because they last longer and they typically retail for more in the store.
Think coats, sweaters, cardigans, hoodies, jeans, workout clothes, and jackets. These are things that don’t wear out quickly and resell for more than a t-shirt.
Best places to sell these are Facebook, online, or local consignment shops.
Shoes
Selling your shoes is a great way to make cash fast. Especially if you have high end shoes. Studies show that the average American woman owns 19-27 pairs of shoes. That’s crazy. And we add more every season.
If you haven’t worn a pair of shoes since the last season you should really get rid of them. Clutter is bad for your health. And you can make some extra dough.
Purses
Purses in great condition go like hotcakes on Facebook and online consignment stores. Brands like Coach, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, Dooney & Bourke, and many more don’t really lose much value. I see these sell for 50-75% off retail. That’s great value.
Tools
If your husband is a tool collector and don’t use half of what he has or has duplicates you can sell these tools for extra cash. Tools like sanders, grinders, or saws are easy to sell and don’t lose much value if they’re in good condition.
Tools such as hammers, screw drivers, wrenches, and pliers can be sold in bundles for a good chunk of change.
Homeschool Curriculum
I love selling our old homeschool curriculum. It gives me extra space, gets rid of clutter, and gives me extra cash to use to buy new curriculum. The best place I’ve found to sell curriculum is Facebook homeschool curriculum buy/sell groups.
Video Game Systems and Games
Parents go nuts over used video game systems and games because they’re so expensive to buy new. Kids go nuts over used gaming systems and games when they’re trying to buy it themselves.
You can bundle games and sell for a good price online.
Do your research before pricing. Visit GameStop.com to see how much used gaming systems and games are there and compare your offers to make sure you’re getting the best deal.
Other options to sell online
Facebook and FB resell groups
- Ebay.com
- Gamestop.com
- Cashforgamers.com
- Bestbuytradein.com
- Declutter.com
- Secondspin.com
- Amazon Marketplace
Big Ticket Items
When I say big ticket items I’m talking about T.V.’s, pianos, lawn mowers, sewing machines. If you don’t use it or could downgrade to something smaller, get rid of it.
Furniture
Getting rid of unneeded furniture is easy to do online if it’s in good condition. Heck, even furniture in bad condition can sell to DIYers. These people love to take something ugly and make it beautiful.
Make sure your good furniture is free of cigarette smoke, bed bugs, tears, holes, and stains.
I’ve sold on Facebook. Another place to sell is a local used furniture store.
Phones and Accessories
Almost every phone I’ve ever had has been used. I always buy off of Facebook, Amazon, or Ebay. Amazon also has a trade in program in exchange for gift cards. Check it out here.
Once again, Facebook is a good place to sell your good used phones and accessories. Even if your phone isn’t good enough to talk on, you can always sell it to a kid to use as an ipod or to use with wifi.
Sports Equipment
This is a necessity of parents with kids who love sports and sports aren’t cheap. These items are easy to sell on Facebook. Think baseball gloves, bats, knee pads, and helmets.
Rodeo moms, don’t forget rodeo equipment sells amazingly well because it’s so expensive new.
Big Toys
Plastic playhouses, bikes, tricycles, battery powered automobiles. These things sell quickly on Facebook. And they sell for great value if they’re in good condition.
So many people want them but can’t afford them at full price. Items like these usually sell within the first few hours of posting on Facebook if priced right.
Baby Gear
I loved buying used baby gear when I had babies. Babies grow so fast they barely use anything they have. It’s almost new by the time you get done with it meaning you can sell it as almost new.
Think high chairs, strollers, playpens, baby wearing gear, walkers, bouncers, etc. Anything that you don’t use everyday you probably won’t miss when it’s gone.
Tack
If you have horses that aren’t being used get rid of your tack (if you aren’t using your horses you should probably sell them, too.) All horse people have extra tack that we don’t use every time we ride. Get rid of it.
There are Facebook tack buy/sell groups in your area and people looking for this stuff because it’s so darn expensive new.
Where to Sell Stuff To Make Extra Money
There are many places to sell your stuff. As you can see from reading above, Facebook is my favorite go to place to quickly get things sold. On my personal page and my buy/sell groups.
Another great option to get stuff sold quickly is local pawn shops.
Many people are a little intimidated to take something to their local pawn shop, but pawn shops give you cash right on the spot, one downside being that you may get less than what the item is actually worth. But, if your in a tight spot this is a good option for you.
Another, slower, way to make extra money is at consignment shops and consignment events, online and offline. Some popular online consignment sites are Ebay.com, Swap.com, ThredUp.com, PoshMark.com, and Craigslist.com.
I hope this list was helpful to you. It’s your turn to help others out- What are some things that you’ve sold to get cash fast? Where did you sell them?
